Using the term “water closet” in place of “toilet” is made in Europe because it was considered offensive to use the word “toilet”. Water closet does not mean bathroom and used as a reference for “toilet”. Well, there are several reasons to use the word, “water closet” in place of a “toilet”. • In the earlier times, the first plumbed bathrooms were of the size similar to a closet. So, toilet got the name ‘water-closet’ and it is used even in today’s time especially in Europe and America.
• Many hundred years ago, it was considered offensive to use toilet for the place of cleaning the bowel. Hence, the tradition started from that time and it is continued even in today’s time on a large scale.
• The first indoor toilets were placed in closets and so it was decided by people to use the term “closet” in place of toilet.
• Water closet referes to the closed rooms with a connection to a natural water sheds which washed away the excretory waste from that room. Hence, when the advancement took place and a toilet started coming into existence, then it was preferred by people to call it “water closet”.
• In the past times, most of the rooms had only one rooms which had the facility of a running water.
