As the number of cognizable crimes in India is increasing with every passing day, so everyone feels the need to file an online FIR report once in a while. Do you know how to file FIR online in any state of India? Well, many people may know the offline procedure to file FIR / Complaint report, but still, there is hardly any awareness about filing an online FIR in India. Here, in the post, we have explained the step by step process to lodge FIR online in India. To illustrate, we have taken the example of an online FIR for lost mobile in Delhi state. Before knowing the entire procedure for filing police FIR online, let’s know the basic knowledge about FIR.
Important Points to Keep in Mind While Filing FIR
- FIR stands for First Information Report and it can be prepared by a police officer based on the information provided by a victim. Also, one can register it online on the Mobile phone. FIR can only be registered in the case of cognizable offense.
- There is a difference between complaint and FIR. A Complaint is an allegation against the person who has committed a crime and it can be registered orally or in writing, in front of the magistrate. Whereas in the case of FIR, a police report is generated by giving all the details related to any offense.
- The procedure for filling FIR is defined in Section 154 of Criminal Procedure Code, 1973.
- Any person who has seen any crime happening, with whom crime take place can register a FIR.
Steps to File Online FIR
Step 1: To start the process of filing an Online FIR, first open the search engine on your Mobile/Computer System.
Step 2: Click on the official website of Delhi police i.e., www.delhipolice.nic.in (the link will be shown on the webpage of a search engine)
Step 3: After clicking on the link, you will be directed to the home page of Delhi police website. Here you have to click on “Citizen Services”, which is shown on the mobile/computer screen.
Step 4: Once you clicked “Citizen Services”, you will be directed to the next page. Here, you will see many options for filing your FIR/complaint. You need to click on “Theft e-FIR” which would lead you to another page.
Step 5: Now, you will see two options namely, “Lost Report” and “Stolen Report”. In case, you have lost your mobile, then you need to select the first one (i.e., lost report). Otherwise, for an act of stealing, you have to click on the second option (i.e., Stolen Report). This is so because there is a fine difference between FIR and Police Complaint, which had been explained clearly above.
Step 6: Suppose, a mobile is stolen so click on “Stolen report” which will direct you to the new page where you will see two options namely “Existing User” and “New User”. Now Click on “New User” and you will see a new screen where you have to sign up to register your FIR. To sign up, you need to fill your username, Email Id and mobile number to proceed.
Step 7: After signing up, you will receive an “OTP” on your registered mobile number. Fill this OTP in the field to verify.
Step 8: In the next step, you will see a number of options from where you need to select “register FIR”. By clicking on “register FIR”, you will see a notification and you need to click “yes” button on this notification.
Step 9: Once this much is done, then on the next page again a notification appears on the screen which asks you whether you know the suspect or not. If you know the alleged person who has committed the act of stealing the mobile phone, then click on “yes”. Otherwise, you just need to click “No”. After this, you will be asked via a notification whether someone is injured in this act or not. If someone is injured during the act of stealing, then click on “yes” else “no”.
Step 10: After all these steps, a form appears on the screen for you to fill. In this form, you need to fill in your personal details, place of theft, date duration, timings etc. Then, click on the “Next” button on the bottom right side.
Step 11: In this next screen, you have to mention the type of incident and location of the theft. Also, you need to specify whether or not you have seen the thief. You also need to select the type of vehicle used by the thief, if any. After filling all these details, you need to click on the “Next” button on the bottom right corner of the mobile/computer screen.
Step 12: After this, you will be directed to the next page where you need to specify some details (height, age) related to the suspect if you have any knowledge related to it.
Step 13: On the next page, you have to specify the details of an item which is stolen. By filing details on this page, you will see a similar page. If more than one item is lost, then click on the + sign and fill the required details.
Step14: After completing this, you will be asked to fill some personal details of your own. Also, in the text field given below, you need to specify some more details of the suspect. The, click on the “Register” button mentioned on the bottom right corner.
Step 15: Once you clicked on “register” button, your FIR will be successfully registered. You will receive FIR number as well as FIR copy in PDF format.
